A former gym teacher accused of swindling students and making them buy wellness beverages from his side gig is awaiting a decision from the Ontario College of Teachers’ disciplinary committee.
Rory Kosonic spent two years teaching for the Peel District School Board before he was terminated, the PDSB confirmed.
Although the school name is redacted in the college’s notice of hearing, an Internet search links Kosonic to Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School, near Dixie Mall.
He’s accused of varying degrees of professional misconduct.
During the 2012-13 school year, Kosonic was running a wellness beverage business.
Documents detail allegations of: pocketing money collected from students; involving and soliciting students in his business; getting parents to sign documents agreeing to buy his products on a monthly basis; holding business meetings attended by students at school, his home, and other locations; instructing students to consider his beverage business ‘homework’; communicating with students outside of school hours through text, e-mail, and telephone on numerous occasions; telling a student at 11:30 p.m. to provide his parents’ credit card number within 29 minutes “otherwise the deal would be off”; leading students and parents to believe his beverage business had been sanctioned by the school and/or principal.
Kosonic got married in January 2013, and according to social media accounts now works as a strength and conditioning coach at Form and Function Performance Training on Clarkson Rd. N.
His status with the OCT is suspended due to non-payment of fees.
“In this case, he has chosen not to pay or he has forgotten to pay his membership fee,” said Morwenna Marwah from the communications department.
“Members who are not in good standing are not eligible to teach in any publicly funded school in Ontario.”
Kosonic appeared before the disciplinary committee Sept. 4.
“When a decision has been reached, it will be posted on our website,” Marwah said.
