More than 500 families in need will be devouring a bird this Christmas thanks to fundraising efforts via the 8th annual Charles Sousa Holiday Turkey Drive.
“I’m very grateful for the generosity of our community and sponsors in support of another successful holiday turkey drive,” said Sousa, the Mississauga South MPP.
This year’s drive raised an estimated $17,500 as part of the community’s ‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas campaign.
A tractor-trailer load of Ontario-raised turkeys are being doled out to families in need through the Mississauga Food Bank and the Compass Food Bank.
“This valuable source of protein ensures families in Mississauga are fed at the holidays and into the new year,” said MFB executive director Chris Hatch.
More than 4,600 turkeys have been donated since 2009, representing roughly $147,500 worth of donations in total.
“Charles Sousa’s turkey drive has brought our community together for seven years to support those in need during the holidays,” said Port Credit BIA general manager Ellen Timms.
